MONROVIA, Liberia (allafrica) -- A new population and housing census provisional results put Liberia at 3,489,072 people.

The provisional results were released last Friday by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf at the Foreign Ministry.
The figure -- based on data collected door-to-door in May -- are in line with projections by development agencies in the absence of official figures during the 1989-2003 conflict that left 250,000 people dead.
The last census, in 1984, put Liberia's population at 2,101,628.
